While I was an excellent student in high school, my first love was riding. When it was time to choose a college, I thought I would have to give up riding to attend a first tier school. But then I heard about Smith College from a friend at my stables. Being a Midwesterner, I had never heard of Smith College and was thrilled to find out that they actually had a stables within two blocks of campus! I remember visiting the stables at Smith with my mother on a beautiful New England fall day and watching Sue give a lesson in the field across the street where we used to ride. It was like a dream come true, and I decided then and there to apply early decision to Smith.
I went on to ride for 3 years on Smith team (I spent junior year away), and served as the Equestrian Team Captain my sophomore year. Riding defined my Smith experience, but it wasn't just riding on the team was important - it was being able to ride 3-4 times a week without disturbing my educational goals. I could go to a class, go ride, and then be back before my afternoon lab. It was awesome. My heart aches that my beloved alma mater is so callously throwing away this amazing program.
